Tribe wanted? I’ve heard of criminals being wanted and people with a GSOH being wanted but never a tribe, so when Ben told me he wanted a tribe, I was slightly confused. Being slightly spaced out by his ‘want’, my first question was why do you want a tribe, ‘you’ve got a family and plenty of friends, do you really need a tribe; it’s a bit indulgent isn’t it?’ However when he told me why a tribe was required the fog within my mind began to clear. Ben and his good friend Mark James (MJ) had been hatching a plan other the last couple of months with a degree of cloak and dagger that would have made Lady Macbeth like an open book. Within this period they had laid the foundations and plundered their bank accounts to create the worlds first online and real life community – Adventure Island, Fiji. And I’m pleased to say the career break café, has managed to secure the exclusive first interview with the enterprising pair to tell us more about this exciting and fascinating proposal! But what is tribewanted.com? I immediately expressed my interest to join, by extolling my abilities of making fires and catching fish, and explained I was more than willing to par-take in any form of tribal ritual to secure my place among the other 5000 fortunate. Thankfully they explained that the passage into the tribe, wasn’t as laborious as joining the civil service fast track scheme, as all that was required; was a sense of adventure, an open mind and a small subscription of £120. From looking at the photos of Adventure Island and being carried away by the excitement that the two gushed when speaking about tribewanted.com, I was hooked. Needless to say I’m now part of the tribe, and I look forward to deciding on the name of the Island, discussing the infrastructure that may be required, what the national anthem of the Island will be (I personally already have visions of working on the islands, with Groove Armada’s ‘down by the river’, being the soundtrack to my stay), and who will be a tribal leader. But, from speaking to the two, tribewanted.com is more than a tangible version of buying a star or an acre on the moon, like all good things it has depth and different facets to it. One of the key things that they were keen to highlight was the emphasis on making the Island climate natural, through encouraging the tribe to off-set the carbon emissions of the flights, and ecological projects on the island. While they also expect the tribe to assist in community project, on the surrounding islands so that the tribe can learn from the original Islanders and vice-versa. These aspects stand-out to make tribewanted.com more than a holiday, but a real experience, which the lucky 5000, will no-doubt treasure. Like all good things, tribewanted.com has icing on its already exotic cake this being the unique online dimension of it. Becky Hunter, who has been instilled as Tribal TV presenter, will provide online updates of activities on the island. So that past, present and future tribal members can observe what happens on their piece of paradise. MJ was keen, however, to stress that this wasn’t just reality TV on another medium, but rather “real life”. They explained to me that just because a tribal member wasn’t on the island, it didn’t mean that they wouldn’t be heard. Thus Becky’s report will provide information on island life, so that the non-residential tribe can express their opinions through blogs and contacting the chief, on the progression of the island. Tribewanted.com strikes me as a fabulous idea, which has many angles to it, to make it a truly amazing experience for those who follow their dreams and ideas like Ben and MJ. I’m ecstatic that I’m part of the tribe as it promises to be one of the most amazing experiences, that those who join ever have. What’s more being able to see the tribe from the comfort of their desktop, will fuel tribal members with anticipation before going, and memories on their return.
