When is best? When to take a career break Lonely Planet’s research says that 60% of career breakers are aged between 25 and 35. Mintel’s research concluded that in July 2005 almost as many career breakers pre-retirement are taking time-out as school-leaving gap year students. So it is difficult to pin-point exactly when most people seem to be taking time-out. The important thing is when does is it fit in with your career plans? There are times when heading off on a career break won’t make sense – like during the middle of training, or when you’ve just started a new job. If you’re an ICE-breaker (independent career escapist) then you have a lot more flexibility in choosing when you take time-out. If you’re a FREE-breaker (families realising experience is everything) then things take a bit more time to sort out as its co-ordinating at least 2 people’s lives to have time-off together. It might be a little easier if you’re a GOLD-breaker (guarders of lifelong dreams) as your kids may have left home and you’ve got less personal ties. Ultimately when you take time-out is going to be unique to each and every individual, couple and family. Do it when you need to, do it when you suddenly have the opportunity, but above all do it when you really want to.
