Freedom to walk the earth

"One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind."

OK so charity treks to the moon aren't advertised in the Sunday papers just yet - but as far as getting out and about on your own two feet, well there are plenty options on this little planet for now.

Walking, trekking, rambling, stumbling, hiking, striding-out - whatever you call it - is about seeing the world at the pace we were supposed to see it. Going 'on foot' means you appreciate every rise, fall, bump and dent of the land. With every rock or grassy-knoll that passes beneath your feet, you gain a wonderful sense of the texture of the natural surface of the earth.

And its not just your feet that relish the experience. Your eyes suddenly become aware of so much more than if you rushed past behind the glass of a car window. Watch the water gush down the mountain canyon, see the creatures scurry under rocks and up tree-trunks, observe the birds that navigate the twisting cliff-tops, and above all enjoy the spectacular effects of the light as it shifts non-stop between night and day and changes every shape around you.

Trekking is for people who want a physical challenge, some inspiration for the mind, and a feeling of calmness and quiet. A trek can last half a day or 3 months. It can go up a mountain, down a valley, follow a river, through a national park, along the coast or across a continent! To trek is to experience a simpler, quieter life. It can be shared with many people or can be done with just one or two. Whatever shape or form it takes, getting out into the natural world on your own two feet is as about as enjoyable as it gets.
